You may have had a survey carried out by a General Surveyor for mortgage purposes during the sale or purchase of a property. It is therefore quite common for the report to state:- “Tests with a Moisture Meter revealed high readings. In our Surveyors’ opinion, there is evidence of Rising Damp due to the lack of or breakdown of the Damp Proof Course – instruct a damp specialist and act on their instructions”.
There are numerous Damp and Timber Treatment firms offering a free survey and estimate. Be aware that most “free surveys” and estimates are carried out by commission-based chemical salesmen, who invariably find some defect, and provide an estimate for chemical treatment.
Those that charge a “token fee” are normally trying to put off clients from obtaining several estimates.
In our experience, most of the work recommended by many of the “treaters” is unnecessary or incorrect, as most damp issues are often mis-diagnosed as rising damp, resulting in costly chemical treatments and leaving you with the original problem.
Abbey Independent Surveys was formed in 1991 to supply accurate, impartial advice to, Architects, Surveyors, Solicitors, General & Maintenance Contractors and National Property Owners, specifically for the correct diagnosis and extent of:-Rising Damp – Woodworm – Wet/Dry Rot – Condensation and the design of cost effective Basement Waterproofing Control
We now have a proven record of accomplishment with major specifiers and well-known multi property owners, for saving substantial contract sums by assessing the true extent (if any) and cost of remedial treatments and general repairs. During the 25 years since inception, we have developed a broad geographic spread of associates within the UK. All are specialists in the remedial treatment industry and without affiliation; and have access to laboratory testing, carry out surveyor training, guarantee disputes and arbitration. Within the company, whether associates or direct employees, all members have undergone extensive training, in excess of the minimum standards, recognized by the British Wood Preserving and Damp Proofing Association (C.S.R.T) and the Institute of Wood Science (F.I.W.Sc.).
Thanks largely to various BBC and National Press exposé of the damp proofing industry, including regular recommendations by The Sunday Telegraph, Times and Mail on Sunday, directly recommending Abbey Independent Surveys as Independent Specialists and also featured on Channel 4’s Project Restoration, domestic clients now form the largest proportion of our business. We have an on-going relationship with numerous Housing Associations, Local Authorities, Architects and many well known Commercial and Retail operations, too numerous to list here.

Thank you for the copy report received through the post today. I would like to say how impressed I have been by the high standard of your company’s work both when you came here last week to conduct the survey and the high quality of the survey report.
Just to let you know that your suggestions have been a great success…. The damp patches in the lounge have gone, and the humidity has gone down from the high 70s to 51%, and there’s no musty smell anymore.
So glad we didn’t spend thousands on the damp proofing recommended by “Roy Rogers and Co”.
Many thanks for your excellent service.

When I think of all the advice received, even from the management company, all of which was wrong, it makes you wonder what the rest of the country is suffering. As the assessor said, your report unfortunately identified the source & there is no getting away from that. It took forever due to the incompetence of the so-called experts we relied on. Thanks for your ongoing help, if only Jeff had done that article earlier in the year.
