RISING DAMP? - PROBABLY NOT!
You may have had a survey carried out by a General Surveyor for mortgage purposes during the sale or purchase of a property. It is therefore quite common for the report to state:- “Tests with a Moisture Meter revealed high readings. In our Surveyors’ opinion, there is evidence of Rising Damp due to the lack of or breakdown of the Damp Proof Course - instruct a damp specialist and act on their instructions”.
There are numerous Damp and Timber Treatment firms offering a free survey and estimate. Be aware that most “free surveys” and estimates are carried out by commission-based chemical salesmen, who invariably find some defect, and provide an estimate for chemical treatment. Those that charge a “token fee” are normally trying to put off client’s from obtaining several estimates.
In our experience, most of the work recommended by many of the “treaters” is unnecessary or incorrect, as most damp issues are often mis-diagnosed as rising damp, resulting in costly chemical treatments and leaving you with the original problem.
